DAPHNE'S BIRDING TIPS & TRICKS FOR JANUARY!
In January our Anna's Hummingbirds are top of mind. With the possibility of freezing temperatures, their nectar can become frozen! With fewer insects and blooming flowers, this leaves them with minimal food sources. We must respond!
We have many options at the shop for keeping nectar thawed. The "Hummer Hearth" is an excellent choice and now our newest addition is called "Anna's Healthy Hummingbird"
It is an insulated Hummingbird feeder, using hot water to keep nectar from freezing.❄️
Another important tip is a weather guard. When it snows the feeder ports can become covered, preventing Hummingbirds from drinking their much needed nectar! We carry numerous sizes of domes that will really help! ☔ Stop by the shop and we can give you the details!
Did you know the Anna's Hummingbird is one of the earliest nesting birds in the U.S?
They often begin mating in early January. 😳
One helpful thing you can do is put out one of our cotton Nesting Balls in your yard. Hummingbirds LOVE these and really use them! They start their nest with moss and lichen, holding it all together with spider webbing. But they need a layer of soft insulative material - that is where the cotton comes in! This is an excellent step to take to truly feel you are helping the female with her challenge!
Having a De-Icer in your birdbath will allow ALL birds to get much needed water when their habitat is frozen. We have a number of choices to consider.
When it comes to our songbirds, they are in need of calories from fat to stay warm.
Our Winter SuperBlend is an excellent seed choice to give them now, along with suet, to help get them through these long, cold nights.
Let's all do what we can to help our birds in winter! ❤️ 🥰
