DAPHNE'S BIRDING TIPS & TRICKS FOR NOVEMBER!
❄️🌑It's official! We have entered the Big Dark! Now that it is dark at 4:30pm with sunrise at 7am, our birds must roost at night for nearly 14 hours! In order to survive these long, cold winter nights, they must consume many calories during the day, especially FAT!
Adding fat is not only essential, but easy to add to the foods you are providing. Take any seed blend you are using and add our Bark Butter Bits. These yummy morsels can also be served separately. Our Treat tray is a really fun way to offer these or shelled peanuts - another food high in fat! Or, even easier is to try our Winter Superblend Super Food! It is specially formulated with 42% fat content!
Another excellent fat source is suet. By adding another type of suet feeder to your yard, you can attract more species of birds. Example: our tail prop feeder is a preferred design with Northern Flickers, Hairy and Pileated Woodpeckers. But for our super tiny Bushtits, Chickadees, Nuthatches and the Downy Woodpecker an upside-down suet feeder is ideal because they are all small clinging birds. It is natural for them to hang upside down to eat!!
Our Anna's Hummingbirds are establishing their winter feeding territory with bold and feisty behavior. This is an excellent time to add an additional nectar feeder. However, It MUST be placed out of the line of sight of the first feeder. Otherwise, the aggressive action will continue! Remember to add a weather guard to keep off rain and snow. If freezing temperatures occur, be sure to add the Hummer Hearth, to keep their nectar thawed. (Coming soon . . . Insulated Anna's Hummingbird Feeders!)
🌧️With our endless winter rains, keep a close eye on your bird seed feeders. Seed can become damp, clumped and then moldy. YUCK! This is unhealthy for birds and they will avoid your feeders. Best defense? A wide rain guard, more frequent cleaning, and the use of Feeder Fresh. This is a super helpful, safe absorbent granule. Stop by the shop and we can tell you how to use it! 👍
Enjoy the Birds! ❤️
